1. Reserve a COMPACT or ECONOMY car, they are easy to handle in traffic and easy to park.   
2. Agencies always try to upsell you to a luxury vehicle.  If you say no, they will often give you an upgrade for the same price.
3. Agents will always try to fear monger you into unnecessary extra insurance or renting a GPS.  Be prepared to say no.
4. Most places have a FUEL OPTION, but don’t take this!  Instead, fill up before returning to the rental agency. 
5. Sign up for LOYALTY programs.  They save you time and money, and you will earn points that can be used toward flight credits or other perks.
6. Choose a vehicle that doesn’t stick out!  Don’t advertise that you are a visitor and an easy target, or your car may be stolen.
7. Make sure you do a full car inspection BEFORE you leave the rental agency.  Look for windshield cracks, any exterior scratches or dents, cracked hub caps, tire problems, seat tears or stains, interior scratches or dents, and make sure all the lights work.
8. Sit in the car to ensure all viewing angles are visible to YOU; if not get another car.
9. Make sure to adjust mirrors and the seat when you first get in.
10. Leave plenty of time to return the car.   Don’t forget you will need additional time to get gas and return the vehicle.  You don’t want to miss your flight!
